Thank you. You have taken a very brave step to bring more awareness to Mental Health. On Monday November 30th, Thrive Studios will be hosting the #LiveToThrive2015 campaign donating 100% of all money raised to Lutherwood Child and Family Foundation, and awarding semicolon tattoos to those who have reached their fundraising goals.
But why a semicolon?
Project Semicolon was born from a social media movement in 2013. They describe themselves as dedicated to presenting hope and love to those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction, and self-injury. Project Semicolon exists to encourage, love, and inspire. A semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life. Originally created as a day where people were encouraged to draw a semicolon on their bodies and photograph it, it quickly grew into something greater and more permanent. Today, people all over the world are tattooing the mark as a reminder of their struggle, victory, and survival.
Many tattoos represent a story in a person’s life and #LiveToThrive2015 campaign has been created to help you share your story with many others potentially struggling from the same issues. To receive your free semicolon tattoo, it's time to share your story and message to others about mental health.
So here are your next steps
Step #1 - Review the following participant package and read the frequently asked questions. Print multiple copies of the donation forms and get ready to spread the word.
Step #2 - Now get the message out to your community. Share your story and discuss what this semicolon project is all about, and more importantly what it means to you. This challenge is about awareness and we encourage you to talk with your family, friends, relatives and even post it on Facebook asking for donations towards this worthy cause. You'll be surprised how many people will want to help you, and potentially join you on this fundraising campaign. Use the hashtag #livetothrive2015 to share your message across all social media platforms.
Step #3 - Start collecting money and fill out your donation forms for all funds collected. One hundred percent of the collected funds will be donated to Lutherwood, a not-for-profit organization that provides children’s mental health, employment, housing and family support services in Waterloo Region and Wellington County. For those participants that raise a minimum of $250 will be awarded with a free semicolon tattoo. But please raise more if you wish!
Step #4 - Stop by Thrive Studios anytime before November 15th with your completed donation forms. To those who have achieved raising the minimum $250 donation, we will discuss booking your free semicolon tattoo on the event day of Monday November 30th. We will answer all your questions about getting your tattoo and you can also check out our frequently asked questions below.
Step #5 – Join the many others like yourself on Monday November 30th who have chosen to take on the #livetothrive2015 challenge. We'll be excited to see you and your friends that day to share you're stories and to help make a difference within the community!
*Note: This date will be reserved for those who have raised the minimum donation of $250. If you'd like to book a semicolon tattoo without raising the funds please contact Thrive Studios for more details. If you're not able to attend the campaign on November 30th we can arrange a tattoo appointment on another day. Please review the frequently asked questions section of this package to learn more.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my supporters receive tax receipts for their donations?
Yes, Lutherwood's foundation is a registered charity: number 107650194RR0001. If requested, a tax receipt will be sent by Lutherwood for any monetary donation over $10 to the mailing address provided on the donation form. Please print neatly on the donation form in order to receive your tax receipt. Thrive Studios is not responsible for providing tax receipts and further information can be found by contacting Lutherwood directly. All cheques should be made payable to: Lutherwood Child and Family Foundation.
Why are we required to raise a minimum of $250?
The goal for the #LiveToThrive2015 semicolon tattoo campaign is to raise as much money as possible for the Lutherwood Foundation. By limiting the number of participants, and encouraging each individual to raise at least the minimum amount of money, we will ensure that each participant receives the attention they deserve with the tattoo artist. Getting a tattoo is a significant commitment and only those individuals serious about this should consider participating. Of course, you can always participate in the campaign and make a monetary donation to the cause at any time while visiting Thrive Studios. Although a minimum donation requirement has been set, this does not have to be the ceiling for your personal goal. Remember the golden rule of fundraising: if you don't ask, you don't get. You're not afraid to get a tattoo to do something bold for the fight against mental illness, so take that courage and get out there and fundraise. Aim high and go for it!
I don’t think I can raise a minimum of $250.
Sit down with a piece of paper and write down the names of all of the people in your life. Family, friends, neighbours, co-workers. Go through your address book. Include your doctor, auto mechanic, relatives, former classmates, your child’s teacher, everybody on Facebook, everyone you do business with, your dry cleaner, everyone you talk to at your office, church or school. Think about any people who’ve asked you for money for a charity before and put them on the list. Don’t leave anyone out. You never know who has been personally affected by mental illness and who might be waiting for an opportunity like this to support this cause. Before you know it you will have reached your fundraising goal. Don’t forget to send out a thank you note after the event!
My friend would also like to participate.
Great, the more the merrier. Please have your friend download this information package on our website www.thrivestudios.ca or stop by Thrive Studios to pick up their own participant package. In order for you both to receive a free semicolon tattoo you will each be required to raise the minimum donation amount of $250.
I have friends and family that would like to join me while I get tattooed.
You can bring a “support crew” with you when you come to get your tattoo. Keep in mind that generally the tattoo artist will ask you to limit the number of guests that actually join you in the tattoo room to 1 or 2 as it'll be quite a busy day and tattooing requires concentration and minimal distractions from other guests in the room.
I want to donate but I don’t actually want to have the semicolon tattooed on my body.
Not a problem. Ultimately this is about spreading the message. You are not obligated to get a tattoo even if you wish to take this challenge. Continue fundraising and join us to celebrate on the event date. If you do not feel you can participate in fundraising, Thrive Studios will accept personal donations anytime.
I want the tattoo but I don't think I can attend on the actual fundraiser date of Monday November 30th.
No problem, once you raise the minimum donation of $250 please stop by Thrive Studios and we can arrange another date that can fit within the tattoo artists regular schedule. Please note that there might be a delay receiving your tattoo if you cannot attend on November 30th as our tattoo artists are typically booked in advance.
Why do I need to raise the money by November 15th if the fundraiser date is actually November 30th?
As we expect a large amount of participants fulfilling this challenge, we'll require some time to plan the actual tattoo appointment time slots on November 30th. Requesting all donations by mid November will help us organize the day smoothly without the risk of everyone showing up at the same time to get tattooed.
Can I just book a semicolon tattoo at Thrive Studios without partaking in the fundraiser?
Yes of course, however we strongly encourage as much fundraising as possible. Any future semicolon tattoos that are tattooed at Thrive Studios we will donate $25 to Lutherwood on your behalf.

Lutherwood’s Children's Mental Health Centre in Waterloo is highly regarded as a 'last resort' in treatment options for youth ages 12-18 who suffer from the most challenging mental health difficulties. Through day and residential treatment programs, Lutherwood works with very complex cases from Waterloo Region as well as cases from across Canada that have exhausted their local supports.
